PORTLAND – Sister Mary Philomene Hachey (Kathleen), 89, died Feb. 7, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Manor. She was born, raised and educated in Bangor, a daughter of Donald Sylvan and Bridget Higgins Hachey. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Leonard and Thomas Hachey; and three sisters, Mary Grant, Sister Mary Mercedes, and Inez Day. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and her sisters in community. Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Mary’s Parish, Bangor in 1936. Sister earned a degree from St. Joseph’s College, Standish, in Education. She enjoyed teaching for 34 years and was always pleased when she heard from a former pupil. Among her ministry assignments within the parochial school system of the Diocese of Portland were Cathedral Elementary and Junior High, St. Joseph’s, St. Dominic’s Boys School and Sacred Heart, Portland, St Edward’s, Bar Harbor, St. Mary’s, Orono, St. Mary’s, Biddeford, St. Athanasius, Rumford, St. Joseph’s, Lewiston, St. Mary’s, Calais, and St. Teresa’s, Brewer, She taught one year at St. Ann’s School, Pleasant Point, Perry. After retiring from teaching, she assumed responsibility at Catherine McAuley High School as secretary and then bookkeeper for 20 years until her retirement. She continued using her secretarial and bookkeeping skills for committee and internal ministry needs. Visiting hours will be 2-4:30 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Convent, Stevens Ave., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at St. Joseph’s Convent, Portland. Burial will take place in New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland Wednesday, Feb. 11.
