PERHAM – Smith C. McIntire, 96, died Jan. 20, 2005, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born May 4, 1908, in Perham, the son of Frank C. and Velma (Smith) McIntire. Smith was a graduate of Washburn High School, University of Maine at Orono, and did one year of graduate study at the University of Conn. He worked 11 years with the Maine Extension Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture at Orono in the Fields of Farm Management, Land Planning and Farm Labor. During World War II he was the supervisor of Emergency Farm Labor Supplies in Maine. He organized and managed the Aroostook Farm Labor Association. He served one year as president of the National Council of Agriculture Employers. He served many years as director of Maine Farm Bureau, Eastern States Farmers Exchange and Agway Inc. Smith enjoyed public service and his many years as a potato farmer. He and Charlene especially enjoyed traveling, camping and canoeing, having made the Allagash Canoe trip ten times. He was a member of the State Street Baptist Church in Presque Isle. He and Charlene maintained an active interest in the University of Maine at Orono and the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and the Denver Baptist Seminary in Denver, Colorado, also in local and college sports. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Charlene (Peterson) Sandstrom McIntire of Perham; one son, Duane Sandstrom of Florida; a daughter, Nancy L. Todd and her husband, Raymond; granddaughter, Heidi Clark and her husband, Steven; a grandson, Timothy Todd; two great-granddaughters, Cassandra and Katelyn Clark, all of Caribou. He was predeceased by a sister, Flora M. Flewelling; a twin brother, Congressman Clifford McIntire; and a great-granddaughter, Megan Clark. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, with the Rev. Shelley Timber officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service. A memorial service and interment will be held in the New Sweden Cemetery later in the spring.
