ELLSWORTH – Stephen E. Smallidge, 77, died March 7, 2007. He was born March 22, 1929, the son of Curly and Marguerite (Turnbull) Smallidge of Northeast Harbor. Steve graduated from high school in Beliville, N.J., in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years in Korea. After his military service, he graduated from Arnold College, Milford, Conn., in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a teacher in Maine for 10 years in the towns of Patten, Castine and Northeast Harbor. He then taught in Somers, Conn., for 14 years. Upon retirement from teaching in 1976, he worked as a groundskeeper at the Northeast Harbor Golf Course, worked for the Village Improvement Society, Seal Harbor and then worked at Rockefeller Gardens until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 208, AF & AM, of Northeast Harbor. Throughout his life, Steve enjoyed his family, his home, his cars and his daily routines. In his later years, he enjoyed watching golf tournaments on TV and especially enjoyed the company of his beloved cocker spaniel, Casey. Steve was predeceased by both of his parents, as well as his wife of 24 years and the mother of his children, Beth (Maddocks) Smallidge. He leaves behind his loving wife of 25 years, Polly (Tibbetts); his three children, Kirk and his wife, Sue, of Hebron, Conn., Laura and her special friend, Chris, of Surprise, Ariz., and Glenn and his wife, Kim, of Ellsworth; three grandchildren, Kate, Megan and Jeff Smallidge; a stepdaughter, Sally Peabody; a stepson, Ben Graves; three stepgrandchildren, Hillary and Becky Peabody and Alicia Graves-Jewel; and one great-stepgrandchild, Elizabeth; also special friends, Miles and Janette Grindle. Visiting hours for family and friends will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday. Interment will be at Brookside Cemetery, Mount Desert. Those who desire may make contributions in Steve’s memory to the charity or scholarship of your choice.
