MACHIASPORT – Stephen Esten Wood Jr., 71, died June 6, 2004, at an Ellsworth nursing home. He was born Oct. 28, 1932, in Machiasport, the son of Carrie (Hicks) and Stephen Wood Sr. He worked for many years lobster fishing and logging with his horses. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty F. (Quimby) Wood; his mother-in-law, Cora Quimby of Bucks Harbor; a son, Norman and wife, Zita, of Bucks Harbor; six daughters, Karen Mahar and husband, Buddy, of Trescott, Lois Decatur and friend, Alan Gardner, of Machiasport, Clarice Colbeth and husband, Warren Jr., of Machiasport, Stacey Smith and husband, Peter, of Machias, Patsy Gagne of Machiasport, and Wanda Wood and friend, Brent Davis, of Cutler; two brothers, Kenneth and wife, Rachel, and John and wife, Carol, all of Machiasport; five sisters, Beatrice Graham of Chelsea, Wyona Lopes and husband, William, of Manchester, Conn., Margaret Flaherty and husband, Reginald, of Machiasport, Lois Wasson and husband, Eugene, of Old Town, and Nellie Gatcomb and husband, Tim, of East Machias; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a fourth on the way; a brother-in-law, Danny Quimby and wife, Jean; a sister-in-law, Myrlene Quimby; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, especially his best friend, Eddie Murphy. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Faunce Quimby. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Larrabbe Cemetery, Machiasport, with Pastor Paul Dodge officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the home of John and Carol Wood. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association-Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04104 or to Courtland Rehab Center, Ellsworth. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Lubec.
