KENDUSKEAG – Stephen J. Velgouse, 60, died July 27, 2004, at a Bangor hospital from complications of lung cancer. He was born Jan. 20, 1944, in Norwich, Conn., the son of Steve and Elsie Julia (Fox) Velgouse. Stephen grew up in Oakdale, Conn. and graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1962, where he was a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA). He served his country in the U.S. Army and was mostly stationed in Germany. In 1968, he married Barbara Tylenda, and together they began dairy farming in Torrington, Connecticut. In 1972, Stephen and Barbara moved to Kenduskeag where they realized Stephen’s goal of owning and operating a dairy farm, and where they raised three children. His interests and hobbies included cars and racing, fishing, mechanics, and being with his family. Stephen was a quiet, unassuming man with a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 36 years, Barbara (Tylenda) Velgouse; a son, David Velgouse and wife, Melenie, of Kenduskeag; two daughters, Wendy Vahlsing and husband, Matt, of Marlborough, Conn., Erika Velgouse, of Oakdale, Conn.; three grandchildren, Ethan, Evan, Liam; four sisters, Christine Cosentino and husband, Tony, Carol Brophy and husband, John, all of Preston Conn., Linda Velgouse of Washington, D.C., Bonnie Yackovetsky and husband, Patrick, of East Haddam, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to visit with the family 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 30, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson, Chaplain of Husson College, officiating. Interment will be at Kenduskeag Village Cemetery, Kenduskeag. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Stephen’s memory may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children, care of Anah Shrine Center, P.O. Box 735, Bangor, ME 04402-0735; or to a charity of one’s choice.
