WHITING – Sydney George Wright, 84, passed away peacefully Dec. 1, 2006, surrounded by family. Syd was born in Meriden, Conn., but has called Washington County Maine his home since he was stationed on Cross Island after World War II. During the war he served in the coast guard on the USS Cavalier in the Pacific. Though proud of his service, Syd became a passionate advocate for peace and the obsolescence of war. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia “Tess” (Hathaway); one sister, Lela Stevison and her husband, Ellsworth, of Essex, Conn.; children, Melanie Colbeth and her husband, Doug, Christopher and his wife, Bunny, Jeffrey and Matthew; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Timothy. A memorial gathering will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Holy Name Parish Hall, Machias.
