UNION – Sylvia Lorenda Rice, 94, died Nov. 17, 2004, in Union. She had resided at the Wentworth Boarding Home in Union for the past three years. She was born in Machiasport on Aug. 25, 1910, the daughter of Guy and Alta Colbeth Clark. On Oct. 31, 1925, she married Calvin Johnson. They made their home alternating between Machiasport and the Rockland area. As a devoted mother and grandmother, she enjoyed cooking, shopping and the opportunity to travel. After she raised her family, she cared for foster children in her home. For a number of years she was a cook at the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachussetts. She, along with her husband Calvin, were cooks at the Camden Nursing Home, Eastport Nursing Home and for Mr. and Mrs. Gardner, owners of Roque Island, and their hired help. Surviving are her daughters, Mabel Dodge of Waldoboro, Louise Proctor of Machias and a son, Elson Johnson of Rockland; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris and her husband, Kenneth Ingalls, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husbands Calvin Johnson in 1969, Charles Miller in 1976 and William Rice in 1998; a son, Elliot Johnson, a grandson, Dwight Johnson and two sisters, Rachel Harmon and Irma Rice. Services will be held 12:30 p.m. Nov. 28, 2004, at the Bucks Harbor Baptist Church. A luncheon will be served after the services.
