BELFAST – Sylvia Williams Doak, 82, peacefully passed away Aug. 20, 2007, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. Sylvia was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Peterborough, N.H., the youngest child of the late Samuel and Marie Ilona (Maki) Williams. She graduated from Maynard High School, New Hampshire, in 1943. She then joined the nurses training program at Waldo County General Hospital and became a registered nurse in 1946. She worked throughout Waldo County, both in the hospital and later in private duty assignments. After retiring from nursing, she enjoyed volunteer work in Belfast. She especially enjoyed playing the piano for the elderly in the local nursing homes. Sylvia was an active member of Alcohol Anonymous and enjoyed 27 years of sobriety in the program. Through the years, she traveled all over the state helping set up groups and supporting others who struggled with alcoholism. She married her husband, Norman White Doak in 1955; he predeceased her in 1979. She was predeceased by her three sisters, Elvie Starr, Lahja Rajaniemi and Helen Loupa; and four brothers, Nick Williams, Eino Williams, Raino Williams and John Williams. Sylvia leaves behind her son, Eric Norman Doak and his wife, Lori Doak, of Newburgh; her daughter, Mary Nell Gomane and her husband, William Gomane, of Winslow; four grandchildren, Sara Nell Kohler, Nick Doak, Ryan Kohler and Jarod Doak; and four step-grandchildren, Erik Gomane, Matt Gomane, Lorena Martin and Lindsey Martin; many nieces and nephews. The family welcomes friends to pay their respects during visiting hours 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, Belfast.
