ORONO – Thelma Goodine Scott, 93, went to be with the Lord May 25, 2005. She was born July 20, 1911, in Stillwater, the daughter of George and Annie (Randell) Goodine. She graduated from Old Town High School. Thelma lived and worked in Orono, first as secretary for A.K. Gardnier of the Maine Potato Council and then at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service for 45 years, secretary in the 4-H Club office for K.C. Lovejoy and Brownie Schrumph, County Agent Leader Richard Dolloff, Livestock Specialist Jack Goater, Poultry Economist Frank Reed, and Poultry Specialists Forest Muir and Harry Whelden. She was an active member of the Orono Methodist Church, influencing the lives of many young people during her many years teaching Sunday school. Thelma served the church in many ways including church suppers, committees, as well as holding office in several woman’s groups. She was president of the Orono Senior Citizens and instrumental in obtaining many of the facilities in the early days of the organization. She influenced the lives of several University of Maine college students who rented rooms in her home for several years, including Linwood White of Orono, who with his wife, Jean have since remained close friends. Several past college students continued to visit Thelma when in Orono. Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Leroy, postmaster of the Orono Post Office for several years; her son, Robert; 10 sisters and brothers. She leaves several nieces and nephews, including Patty Cutting of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Josephine Hutchings of Summerville, S.C., Elsie Crockett of Hopkins, S.C., Francis Bissell of Hollis Center, Leroy Hutchings and his wife, Beth, of Brewer, Carlisle Goodine and his wife, Margaret, of Portland, Gloria Wheeler and her husband, Merton, of Orono, Fred Hutchings of Holiday, Fla., George Clark and his wife, Lois, of Stamford, Conn., Charles Goodine and his wife, Barbara, of Madison, Conn., Ada Newhall and her husband, Richard, of Bangor; many great-nieces and great-nephews. Her outgoing and affable nature will be remembered fondly by her many friends and neighbors including Elsie Cota, Dudley Lapointe, and Jane and Harry Whelden. Thelma was very appreciative of the several health aids for their loving care during her confinement to her home, including Debra Holmes of Orono, Pauline Grant and her daughter, Sara, Melissa Swedburg, and Eleanor Perkins, all of Old Town, and Clarice Smith of Bangor. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2005, at Brookings-Smith, Labeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A funeral service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at the United Methodist Church, 36 Oak St., Orono, with the Rev. Ronald Walden, officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service on Tuesday. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
