SOUTH GARDINER – Theodore M. (Ted) Stone Major, U.S.M.C.R., 85, husband of Lois Nelson Stone, passed away at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after an eight year battle with multiple myeloma, Oct. 18, 2004. He was born Nov. 12, 1918, to Mary Irene Violette and Harold C. Stone of Milford. He graduated from Old Town High School and the University of Maine in 1942, with a degree in horticulture. He enlisted in the Marine Corp and upon graduation from O.C.S. served as a Lieutenant with the 23rd regimental weapon 4th Marine Division. He saw action in World War II on Roi-Namur, Saipan, and was wounded on the beach of Iwo Jima. He received several citations including the purple heart. He returned home in 1945 and married Lois Nelson of Stockholm. He began work with the Soil Conservation Service and opened the Augusta office. He continued his military career with the United States Marine Corp. Reserve and was the first Commanding Officer of the Augusta Unit, completing 20 years of service, attaining the rank of Major. After 12 years with the Soil Conservation Service he joined the landscape division of the Maine State Highway Department, retiring in 1979. He served as the first commander of the Winslow-Buckmore Post of the American Legion. He was a member of the Maine Downeast Chapter 21 of the 4th Marine Division Association. He was active in various civic groups and volunteer organizations including Toys for Tots. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent many happy hours hunting and fishing with the many generations of his family. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Robert. His is survived by Lois, his wife of 59 years; one son, Stephen and his wife, Gail, of Dresden; three daughters, Susan and husband, Mahlon MacLaren, of Bangor, Sally Stone of Winthrop and Shelly and David Shaak of Eastbrook; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother Louis and wife, Marilyn, of Hampden; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hazel Nelson and companion, Becky Briggs, of Newport, Clayton and Murial Nelson of Madawaska, Edythe Niles of Kittery, Wanda and Dr. James Orino of Rumford, Neal and Ellie Nelson of Massachusetts, Dana and Sandra Nelson of Ellsworth; several nieces and nephews. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Amesbury, White & Harmon Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner. A private committal service with full military honors will be held at Milford Cemetery, Milford. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Salvation Army or to a charity of ones choice.
