STONINGTON – Thomas Albert Powell, 71, formerly of Rye, N.H. passed away at his home after a long illness, Sept. 4, 2005. The son of the late David William Powell and Eliza E. (Bell) Powell of Needham, Mass. Thomas A. Powell was born Feb. 10, 1934, in Needham, Mass. His passing follows his late brother, John William Powell; and three sisters, Ruth (Powell) Hamilton, Louise (Powell) English, and Mary Ellen (Powell) Upham. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sarah Rose (Kilmain) Powell; four sons, George Thomas Powell, Steven Michael Powell, Jeffery Scott Powell and Thomas Albert Powell Jr.; as well as a daughter, Cynthia Ann (Powell) Callaghan. He is survived by two sisters, Evelyn (Powell) Anderson and Corrine (Powell) Grimaldi; and three brothers, David Lloyd Powell, George Henry Powell and Gilbert Paul Powell; as well as 20 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His career included nearly 50 years in the rubber industry manufacturing bowling balls at Stone and Woodard and diaphragms for the automotive and space industry at the former Diaphragm Industry Inc., Portsmouth, N.H. After Diaphragm Industry was sold to Palmer-Chenard, he stayed on as a chemical engineer retiring from Dowty Palmer-Chenard in 1996. He then moved to Stonington, where he enjoyed the peace of his garden and the love of his family and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Island Community Center, Stonington.
