PRINCETON – Thomas E. Hiland, 57, died unexpectedly on May 8, 2005, as the result of a boating accide-nt. He was born Jan. 2, 1948, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, the son of John W. and Dorothy (Gaddis) Hiland. Tom was a graduate of Woodland High School and Washington County Technical College. He was a member of the Maine Army National Guard. Tom was employed for 38 years with the Georgia-Pacific/Domtar mill as a master journeyman pipefitter. He was an avid outdoorsman and his great love of sports led him to be a volunteer coach for many youth teams in Woodland and Princeton. Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, coaching little league, playing baseball and basketball, four wheeling, and going for rides in his truck with his three dogs. Tom’s latest enjoyment was spending time with his granddaughter, Katherine. He was predeceased by his father, John Hiland; and his grandparents, Harry and Hope Gaddis of Woodland, who he loved dearly. Surviving are his mother, Dorothy Holbrook of Portland; his beloved wife of 30 years, Grace Hiland of Princeton; his three children, John Hiland and his wife, Kim, of Nashville, Tenn., Jodi Hiland of Biddeford, and Jerald Hiland and his wife, Meredith, of Bangor; three sisters, Brenda Smith and her husband, Gerald, of Castle Hill, Barbara Hansen and her husband, Ernest, of Meddybemps, and Beverly Deschambeault and her husband, Normand, of Portland; his most cherished baby granddaughter, Katherine Hiland of Bangor, who he loved with all his heart; several special nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Friday at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where a memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will follow in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton. Those wishing may join the family in a celebration of Tom’s life at their family home at 57 West St., Princeton, immediately after the burial.
