OWLS HEAD – Toivo W. Tarvainen, 81, a resident of Knowlton Ave-nue, died unexpectedly Dec. 14, 2004, from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mr. Tarvainen was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Cushing, the son of Julius and Celia Manninen Tarvainen, and attended Cushing schools. He left school early to work in the woods driving a truck for pulpwood companies, and then joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the European Theatre, and was discharged Dec. 5, 1945. After returning to Cushing, Mr. Tarvainen began his fishing career with O’Hara’s and Sons in Rockland, working on draggers, beginning his career as a mate, and working up to captain of the boat. He then managed O’Hara’s ice plant, and after his retirement, worked in the maintenance department of Region 8 Vocational School in Rockland. He attended the Finnish Church in South Thomaston, was a member of the Rockland Masonic Lodge No. 79, and Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston, and the Finn-Am Association. He enjoyed traveling and attending Army Reunions, reading history books, gardening and Sheba, his husky dog that he enjoyed pampering. He was predeceased by his wife, Rachel Spear Tarvainen, who died April 15, 1990. Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne Prosser and her husband, Sheldon, of Brunswick; two sons, William Tarvainen and his wife, Barbara, of Durham, N.H., Michael Tarvainen of Bangor; six grandchildren, Nicholas Tarvainen, Mariah Tarvainen, James Tarvainen, Rosie Tarvainen, all of Durham, N.H., Tyler Prosser and Kylie Prosser, both of Brunswick. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at the Hall & Davis Funeral Home, 35 Knox St., Thomaston, with a masonic service at 3 p.m. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at the Finnish Church, Rt. 131, South Thomaston. Interment will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at the Old Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta, with Military Honors. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St. Springfield, MA. 01104, in Mr. Tarvainen’s memory.
