TORONTO, Canada – Valentina Elkan, 90, died Sept. 25, 2006, at home. She was born March 8, 1916, in St. Petersburg, Russia, the daughter of Alexander and Maria (Matveeva) Blauberg. She was predeceased by her beloved first husband, Lucas Akliros in 1958 and by her second husband, Tibor Elkan in 1979. Mourned by her dear older sister, Ludmilla Djurkovic and husband, Vladimir, of Melbourne, Australia; cousin, Karin Hasbargen and husband, Freerk, of Denmark and Australia; much missed by her sons, Serge Liros of Blue Hill and his companion, Kathleen Beal, Alex Liros of Toronto and George Liros of Bethlehem, Pa. She will be lovingly remembered by her four grand-daughters, Nicole Simms and her husband, Jonathan, of Schenectady, N.Y., Christina Liros and her companion, Joe Richards, of Greenville, Alexandra Liros of Greenville, Sarah Vega-Liros and her spouse, Janice, of Turners Falls, Mass. She also leaves three great-grandchildren, Dylan Simms, Hannah Simms, and Jonathan Vega; and a great-great-grand-son, Jedidiah Vega. Valja leaves behind many old and dear friends from British Columbia to Ottawa as well as friends and neighbors in Toronto, especially her devoted bridge partners. She was an elegant, energetic lady, a former art dealer in Munich, Montreal, with a keen and inquiring eye, and a generous and loving matriarch of the Liros family. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox Church, 15 Church St., Richmond.
