HOLDEN – Velma Rowe, 91, died peacefully Feb. 19, 2007, at home with her family present. She was born April 5, 1915, in Bangor, the daughter of Ralph and Edith Newbert, of Holden, and was the eldest of their 10 children. She was the loving wife of Clifford Rowe for 41 years. Velma was a kind, loving person of Christian faith and was an active member of the East Holden Community Church, WTCU, and the Brewer Senior Citizens. During World War II, she was employed at Bath Iron Works. She enjoyed cooking and watching the Red Sox and the World Wrestling Federation with her special great-grandson, Clifford. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and her love and kindness will be missed. Velma is survived by three brothers and her beloved sister and best friend, Josephine Gray of Bowdoinham. She is also survived by her firstborn daughter, Phyllis Spease and her husband, James, of Los Angeles; her son, Robert Simmons of Holden; her daughter, Jeanne Cook of Holden; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son, Dick Smith of California. At her request, there will be no services. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Clifford, at Pine Tree Cemetery, Route 46, Eddington.
