BANGOR – Vera E. Small, 76, died Nov. 26, 2003, at a Bangor healthcare facility. She was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Kenduskeag, the daughter of Merritt and Bula (Fitz) Salls. Vera was raised in Corinth, and was graduated from East Corinth Academy as valedictorian in 1945. She worked at Bangor Nursing Center for 16 years and volunteered there after her retirement. After her retirement, she and her husband, Philip, spent many happy years trout fishing in Central Maine. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Philip A. Small of Bangor; four children, Ronald Philip Small and his wife, Linda, of Corinth, Susan Jane and her husband, Dr. Dennis Roncek, of Omaha, Neb., Kirk Frederick Small and his wife, Karon, of Milford, Heather Jane Pelkey of Bangor; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Loring Salls of Bangor; many nieces and nephews including one special niece, Carol Turner of Colorado. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one sister, Eleanor Rubbicco; one brother, John Salls; four grandchildren, Cameron Small, Rebecca Pelkey, Larry Pelkey Jr., and Alan Oxley Jr. She will be remembered by many special friends and neighbors. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bangor. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Recreation Fund, 103 Texas Ave., Bangor.
