ABINGTON, Mass. and SWAN’S ISLAND – Veronica (McCarthy) Loud died July 14, 2006, at her home in Abington, Mass. She was born June 16, 1946, in Augusta, the daughter of Margaret C. Whalen and John W. McCarthy Sr. She grew up in Naples and in Abington, Mass. After graduating from Abington High School, Class of 1964, she was employed for 35 years by the Brockton Enterprise. She maintained lifelong friendships with her friends in Maine and cherished her time at her summer home on Swan’s Island. She was an avid reader and was beloved for her generous spirit and zest for life. She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Charles MacDonald; and her only child, Andrew C. MacDonald. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Donald W. Loud of Abington, Mass.; nine brothers and sisters, Ellen Howe of Princeton, Mass., Patrick McCarthy of Boston and Christmas Cove, Margot Anderson of Salem, S.C. and Swan’s Island, Denis McCarthy of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Catherine Hoffman of Palmetto Bay, Fla. and Swan’s Island, John W. McCarthy of Bangor, Michael A. McCarthy of Westport, Conn., Kevin R. McCarthy of Cohasset, Mass. and Terence E. McCarthy of Cleveland; 27 nieces and nephews and 39 great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at St. Bridget’s Church, Abington, Mass. Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Monday at Quealy and Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams St., Abington, Mass. Interment will be in August at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swan’s Island. Donations in memory of Veronica may be made to the Andrew C. MacDonald Scholarship Fund, care of the Principal Abington High School, Abington, MA 02351.
