WESTFIELD- Viola A. ‘Peggy’ Smith, 77, went home to the Lord May 18, 2005, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Westfield. Peggy was born on Nov. 12, 1927, in Mars Hill, the daughter of James N. and Ellen Cary (Smith) Lawrence. Peggy graduated from ACI in Mars Hill and also attended Husson College in Bangor. At 12 years of age she worked as a waitress in Al’s Diner in Mars Hill. After graduation she worked in the insurance office of Weaver Greenlaw and Nutter until her marriage to Hubert D. Smith June 18, 1947, the following year. She began her family with him and they had nine children, Gail Fernandez, of Hampden, Sylvia (Bruce) Torrey, of Overton, Nev., Sherri Breneman of Florence, Mont., Wendy Stauffer of Lebanon, Pa., Wade (Dana) Smith of Hampden, Robert (Julie) Smith of Orem, Utah. Our mother’s life was always filled with a deep love for her; 16 beloved grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, husband Hubert, her sons and daughters, family and friends. As a Maine Potato farmers wife, she was an invaluable and tremendous support, one, who always had a positive influence on others. Peggy had many gifts in this life, some being that of a talented artist, teacher and a terrific story teller who treasured living in Aroostook County. She leaves behind family including two brothers, Gerald (Mary) Lawrence, Phillip (Beryl) Lawrence; brother-in-law, Herschel (Betty) Smith, Wayne Cushman, Margaret Smith, Irene Smith, Marion (Bob) Grandchamp, Barbara Hotham; many nieces and nephews, as well as many good friends. Peggy was predeceased in death by her beloved husband, Hubert; three infants; one brother, Donald; and a son-in-law, Victor Fernandez. As an avid reader Peggy greatly enjoyed crossword puzzles and cryptograms. She had a great love for animals of all types and a special knack for healing and raising them, both domestic and wild they completely trusted her in return. Our Mother fully enjoyed the simple pleasures life has to offer and her door was always open to family, friends and strangers. All who crossed her path found a friendly and very dear person. There was a place in her heart for a special best friend and sister-in-law Barbara Hotham; special cousin, Christine Wheeler Sawyer; and special friends, Jean (Burlock) Porter, Audrey Reese Perry, Norma Smith Tweedie and other dear friends not forgotten but to numerous to mention. Mum you will always be in our hearts, forever loved and sorely missed. A graveside service was held Monday, May 23, 2005, at Pierce Cemetery.
