NEWBURGH – Viola M. (Lanphier) Day, 87, wife of the late, Alvin A. Day, passed away, April 11, 2004, at an Ellsworth healthcare facility after a long illness. She was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Hampden, the daughter of Daniel G. and Minnie B. (Partridge) Lanphier. Viola was a longtime Newburgh resident and had worked for many years redecorating and maintaining apartment complexes. She was a former member of the Newburgh Congregational Church. Viola was talented with her hands and enjoyed quilting, rug hooking, putting puzzles together, bird watching and tending to her flower gardens. She is survived by her children, Carlton A. Wing of St. Augustine, Fla., Daniel V. Day and his wife, Mary, Arthur A. Day and his fianc‚e, Linda M. Nealley, and Robert L. Day and his wife, Sondra, all of Newburgh; one sister, Florence Cobb of Hampden; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; a son, Leroy Wing; a brother, Robert Lanphier; a sister, Nellie Ellingwood; and by a daughter-in-law, June Wing. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with Pastor Donald Campbell, of Nealley’s Corner Church and a close family friend, officiating.
