BANGOR – William Howard Shepard Sr., 88, passed away at home in his sleep on Friday April 9, 2004. He was born June 29, 1915, in Beverly, Mass., the son of Ernest Howard Shepard and Sarah (Moffett) Shepard. He was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1933. Mr. Shepard served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from April to September in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Europe Third Army under the leadership of General George Patton from 1942-1945. On Oct. 14, 1945, he married Gwendolyn E. True in Washington, D.C., at the All Souls Unitarian Church. They moved to Bangor, where William got a job as clerk at the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. He worked there for 34 years. He worked on the maintenance crew of Bangor Savings Bank for 10 years. William was a member of the Bangor Unitarian Universalist Society for more than 50 years. He also belonged to the American Legion Post No. 12, Bangor, and the Bangor Nature Club. His son, William Howard Shepard Jr. died on Sept. 14, 2002. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Gwendolyn of Bangor; daughter-in-law, Ruth Gitchell Shepard of Natick, Mass.; four daughters and their spouses, Linda and Raymond Hardy of Gray, Susan and Gary Dow of Marshfield, Mass., Beverly Shepard of Bangor, Nancy and James Lamson of Lisbon; a son, Benjamin Shepard of Glenburn; grandchildren, Danella and Dennis Hardy, of Framingham, Mass., Jeremiah Lamson of Concord, N.H., Jennifer Lamson of Lisbon; a great-grandson, Devan Hardy of Framingham, Mass.; a sister and her husband, Norma (Shepard) and Laurence Trefry; a brother, Ernest C. Shepard all of Beverly, Mass.; several nieces , nephews, and cousins. Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2004, at The Unitarian Universalist Society, 120 Park St., Bangor, with the Rev. Elaine Beth Peresluha, pastor, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to a reception at the church following the service.
