HACKENSACK, N.J. – Virgil Ernest Thompson, 65, went home to be with the Lord Aug. 7, 2008, after battling cancer for more than a year. He was born July 10, 1943, in East Millinocket, the son of the late Melvin and Sarah (Powers) Thompson. Virgil spent 31 years working for the Bergen County Parks and Recreation Department. He enjoyed working outside and had many funny stories to tell. One of Virgil’s greatest accomplishments was learning he had Dyslexia and he joined Literacy Volunteers of America at Bergen County Community College, where he learned to read and write. He then volunteered as an aide in the support group “New Vision.” He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Amanda of Hackensack, N.J.; three daughters, Sarah Thompson of Richmondville, N.Y., Luella and Wendy Thompson also of N.Y.; one granddaughter, Cheryl Sheehan of Richmondville, N.Y.; his brothers and sisters and their families, Carl Thompson of Mattawamkeag, Basil Thompson of Tampa, Fla., Alton and Sharon Thompson of Osceola, Ind., Arnold Thompson and Donna of Caribou, Joseph and Debbie Thompson of Glen Carbon, Ill., Geneva Michaud of East Millinocket, Dorothy Doane of Kingman, Robena and Hugh Dugans of Lagrange, Evelyn and Donald Wright of Foxboro, Mass., Joann and Vernon Hunt of Bucksport, and Gloria and Roger Anderson of Mineral Point, Mo. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy; and three brothers and one sister, Melvin Jr. of Seattle, Myles of Jacksonville, Fla., Harold of Belfast and Martha Corbett of East Millinocket. Arrangements are under the care of Vander Plaat Colonial Home, Inc., where his celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, by the Rev. Dwayne Leverett and the Rev. David Zerby. Interment will be after at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, N.J. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the funeral home.
