PENOBSCOT and DEER ISLE – W. Murray Barbour, 71, of Penobscot and Deer Isle passed away Oct. 18, 2004, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 1, 1933, at Deer Isle, the son of Winfield M. and Mary (Davis) Barbour and lived most of his life in Deer Isle and Penobscot. Murray is survived by his children, a son, W. Matthew Barbour and his wife, Elizabeth, of Sedgwick and their children, Christie and husband, Ryan; Mark and daughters, Chloe and Olivia; Matthew and wife, Niki and daughter, Jaiden; a daughter, Gayle Clifford and her husband, Earle Clifford Jr.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Clifford; one sister, Mary Alice Haskell and her husband, E. Douglas, of Deer Isle; one brother, Chandler Barbour and his wife, Nita, of Deer Isle; plus several nieces and nephews. Murray was predeceased by wife of 43 years, Lois Ewing Barbour, in 2001; and two sons, Duane and Randall Barbour. Murray attended schools in Deer Isle and graduated from Deer Isle High School. He entered a career in construction work and followed this for a number of years. He later worked as a foreman with Maine’s Department of Transportation for 19 years before retiring in 1995. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea for two years, was a VFW member, and a member of Marine Chapter of the Masonic Lodge in Deer Isle. Murray will be remembered for his fondness for the water in and around Penobscot Bay. He took special pleasure in his farm at Deer Isle and always called the old homestead “Home”. Murray prized the family picnics and get-togethers he hosted for family and friends at his farm, and he delighted in sharing puzzles, bewildering problems to solve, historical anecdotes, and antique tools. A memorial service is scheduled 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Deer Isle in the Barbour Farm field on Sunshine Road. Family members, friends and colleagues are invited to attend. Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Adams Cemetery in Deer Isle.
