ROBBINSTON – Wallace F. Diffin, 87, died peacefully Jan. 1, 2008, at home. Wallace was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Robbinston, the son of Fred and Bretha Ayer Diffin. He was employed at local factories and worked for the State of Maine Department of Transportation; he also worked as a woodsman. He enjoyed gardening and doing outdoor activities with his grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II during the Pacific campaign, he was also a lifetime member of the Sherman Brothers Post No. 3 American Legion of Calais. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Bretha Diffin; wife, Gertie Diffin; brother, Ronald Diffin; sisters, Ethel Drew and Ellen Brooks; and a special son-in-law, Perley Merryfield. He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Merryfield of Robbinston; stepdaughters, Catherine and Mike Phee of Florida, Marjorie Burns of Old Town; stepson, Clinton Hewey of California; grandchildren, Danny Merryfield and Yvonne Morrell of Robbinston, Scott and Betsy Merryfield of Janesville, Wis., Bonny and Richard Anderson of Manchester, N.H., and Meloney and Angelia of Florida; many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Brewer Cemetery at a later date.
