WALTER CLARENCE ‘SONNY’ LAWRENCE WESTFORD, Mass. – Walter Clarence “Sonny” Lawrence, 74, beloved hus-band of Carolyn (Kinghorn) Law-rence, comforted in his last days by family and friends, died July 31, 2007, after a courageous struggle against colon cancer. He was April 16, 1933, born in Harrington, a son of the late Charles and Jessie (Nichols) Lawrence. He was a graduate of Harrington High School, Class of 1951, and then spent a year working on an oil tanker, living his dream of sailing around the world. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1958 from the University of Maine, as well as a master’s degree from Northeastern University. Walter worked at Ingersol Rand, Corning, N.Y., and worked two years for Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. He was transferred to Western Electric, Andover, Mass., where he worked for more than 35 years, receiving many commendations for his outstanding contributions. Throughout his life, “Sonny” enjoyed returning to the brooks, ponds and woods of his youth, especially enjoying hunting for deer and fishing for trout with his brothers-in-law. In his retirement, he rebuilt car engines and went ocean fishing with his brother-in-law, Ellis Batson. His family will miss the many stories he told of past generations in Harrington, as well as his devotion to his ancestors and his care of their graves. His immediate family was his top priority always. He was a member of the Tuscan Masonic Lodge of Addison. In addition to his wife of 54 years, Walter is survived by a daughter, Frieda and her husband, Kyriakoulis Tsouprakos, of Phoenix; four sisters, Elaine Mayhew and her husband, Dana, of Amherst, N.H., Katrina Norberg and her husband, Robert, of Southwest Harbor, Junita Drisko and her husband, Hugh, of Orrington, and Helene Hammond and her husband, Ellis, of York. He was a loving grandfather to three grandchildren, Theoni Anita, Katina Lynn and George Kyriakoulis Tsouprakos; two great-grandchildren, Casey Michal and Celeste Marie Tsouprakos; and will be missed by many nieces and nephews. He was the father of Celeste Marie Lawrence, who predeceased him. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Healy Funeral Home, 57 North Main St., Westford, Mass. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Forest Hill Cemetery, Harrington.
