COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – Walter “WR” Ray Johnston, 60, Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army Retired, of Colonial Heights, Va., died Jan. 29, 2004. He was born in Presque Isle, the son of the late Olivine (nee Michaud) and the late Herbert Johnston. He joined the army at the age of 17 and retired after 20 years. He served two years in the war in the Republic of Vietnam. He received numerous awards among which were the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Cross of Gallantry with Palm Award, the Distinguished Instructor Award, six Vietnam Campaign Ribbons and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He served tours in Germany, Korea and at Fort Lee, Va. He was retired from Civil Service. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, Post 2239 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and of Colonial Heights American Legion Post 284. He is survived by daughters, Patricia L. Cox, Jennifer M. Webb and Cynthia M. Jackson; three grandchildren, all of Virginia; brother, Michael P. Johnston of Michigan; devoted friend, Barbara Lewandowski. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sandy Johnston; and his sister, Sandra Clark. He is accompanied in death by his beloved cat, Squeaky. An American Legion memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will take place 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in the VA State Cemetery in Amelia. He asked that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Colonial Heights SPCA.
