BUCKSPORT – Walter L. Gowen Sr., 78, died Sept. 30, 2005, at a Bangor healthcare facility. He was born June 17, 1927, in Bucksport, the son of Fred L. and Beatrice M. (Winchester) Gowen. Walter worked at Realty Oil Company and Yerxa’s Lawn and Garden Center in South Portland for many years. In his retirement years in Bucksport, he ran Gowen’s Light Trucking Company. He is survived by nine children, Velma (Gowen) Nguyen of Portland, Vera (Gowen) Goodhue of Connecticut, Walter L. Gowen Jr. of New Jersey, Floyd Gowan of Rhode Island, Ruben Gowen of Portland, Harold Gowen of Bucksport, Robert Gowen Sr. of Bangor, Linda (Gowen) Bowden of Scarborough, and Leonard Gowen of Bangor; two sisters, Lillian Grindle and her friend, Jim Davis, of Bucksport, and Edith Tate and her friend, Rusty Bickford, of Holden; three brothers, Floyd Gowan and his wife, Shirley, of Bucksport, Guy Gowen and his wife, Shirley, of Buxton, and Ralph Gowen of Bucksport; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Walter was predeceased by his wife, Mary A. (Moore) Gowen May 14, 2002; and one daughter, Marjorie Cannell Oct. 12, 1995. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Hillside Cemetery with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
