MARS HILL – Wayne Warren Cushman, 81, went to be with the Lord, March 21, 2006. Wayne was born July 18, 1924, to Howard and Hazel (Haines) Cushman of Fort Fairfield. He graduated from Fort Fairfield High School in 1942. Wayne served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then married M. Opal Smith Oct. 29, 1952 and they raised four children, Helene, Warren, Nola and Nolan. Wayne attended East Ridge Union Church in Mars Hill and had worked for various companies over the years. Wayne was a man of many loves. He was an active member of the National Ski Patrol for many years and member of the Mars Hill Planning Board. Wayne was also known for his love of golf and his bountiful gardens. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Opal in 2003; and a brother, Owen Cushman. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Helene and Larry Otten of Clarksville, Tenn., Warren and Sherri Cushman of Mars Hill, Nola and Wayne Pendexter of Easton and Nolan and Karen Cushman of Mars Hill; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Beatrice Harpine. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Duncan Funeral Home, Mars Hill. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the East Ridge Union Church, with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating.
