DEER ISLE – Wendell D. Davis Sr., 78, passed away Feb. 24, 2007, surrounded by his family at Island Nursing Home. He was born April 6, 1928, in Blue Hill, the son of the late George and Sylvia (Carter) Davis. Wendell served in the U.S. Army as top sergeant during the Korean War. Wendell worked as a long distance truck driver for many years, he hauled granite that was used in the construction of the Washington Monument; he worked as road commissioner for the town of Deer Isle; and as the night foreman for Callahan Mines, Brooksville. Wendell was a member of the American Legion-Rodney Stinson Post, Stonington and the Deer Isle Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. He was an avid ham radio operator, his call letters being W1HSO. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Erlene (Pray) Davis; son, Wendell Davis Jr. and wife, Linda; daughter, Margery Varnum and husband, Royce; grandson, Cody Varnum and wife, Molly; great-granddaughter, LeeAnn Varnum; many cousins and many special friends. He was predeceased by a daughter; Cynthia Leann. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Island Nursing Home, 587 North Deer Isle Road, Deer Isle, ME 04627. Arrangements are under the care of Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Stonington.
