BANGOR and BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Wilbert Littlejohn, 84, longtime Bangor resident passed away peacefully Sunday evening, Dec. 18, 2005, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, Mass. surrounded by loving family. He was born April 4, 1921, eldest child of Ottoray and Eva Littlejohn in Pacolet, S.C. He served 24 years in the U.S. military, fought in three battles in Europe during World War II and earned a conduct medal, Bronze Star and a Medal of Honor. He remained proud of his military service. He lived for many years on Cedar Street, where he raised his four children, Francine, Pierre, Andree and Nanette after their mother’s death in 1968. Many employees and patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital looked forward to his cheerful greeting at mealtime as the head cook there for many years. He also cooked at the N.C.O. Club on Texas Avenue. In addition, he drove for Yellow Cab for many years. After his retirement as a chef, he remained in the public eye. He delivered the Bangor Daily News and encouraged a generation of children with his infectious smile as a crossing guard. Many remember his personal greeting from the attendant’s booth at the Abbott Square Parking lot across from the Bangor Public Library. He is survived by his children and their families, Francine and her children, Carl, Derek, Jake, Michelina and Emelia of Bridgewater, Mass., Pierre of Bangor, Andree, her husband, John and her children, Justin, Jonathan and Jacob of Bangor and Nanette and her children, Micheline, Jesus and Joshua of Bridgewater, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Nicole, of Canada, who he married in September of 1999 and her children and their families, Caroline and her husband, Philippe and their children, Jenny, Annick, Jonathan and Jose, Johanne and her husband, Stephane and their children, Francoise, Nicolas and Nathan, Rick and his wife, France and their children, Gabriel and Alexandre. He is also survived by two sisters, Morris of South Carolina and Orie of Washington, D.C. He had three children born before he moved to Maine who will miss him dearly, Shirley and her children, Bruce, Brian and Monique, Wilbert “Joe” and his children, Sanbra, Emily and Wilbert Jr. and Michael and his children, Kimberly and Courtney, all of South Carolina. In addition he had 11 great-grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by the following special friends who were recipients of his weekly phone calls, Noel and Sue, Ann and Carroll, Chris and Peggy, Roch and Kathleen, Lewis and Jason, Marie, Eva, Janice, Robby, Pat and Mr. Libby. The family wishes to thank them for being such wonderful friends to him. His children and grandchildren will always remember him for his early morning phone calls, war stories, singing to his oldies music, enjoying Christmas lights and his love of football and baseball. They are particularly grateful that he was able to see his Red Sox win the World Series in 2004. Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29 at St. John’s Catholic Church with the Fr. Nadeau officiating. There will be a reception and Celebration of Life immediately following the service downstairs in the church. Interment services will be held at a later date in Canada.
