CALAIS – William “Bill” Nelligan Jr., 72, died Monday morning at his home. He was born May 22, 1932, in Bangor, a son of William and Mary Leary Nelligan Sr. He attended local schools, graduating from John Bapst High School. Mr. Nelligan was a firefighter for the city of Bangor, retiring in 1976. He also served on the Red Beach Volunteer Fire Department and was the Fire Chief at Georgia Pacific’s Woodland Mill for two years. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of The Maine State Federation of Firefighters and The International Border Firemen’s Association. He was past grand knight of the Bangor chapter of the Knights of Columbus and was a member of Pine Cone Chapter K of C in Calais where he was district deputy and financial secretary. He married the former Sally Shain in 1958. Surviving in addition to his wife of Calais, he leaves two sons, William S. Nelligan and his wife, Dawn, of Lebenon, Conn., and Thomas E. Nelligan and his wife, Thelma, of Belfast; two daughters, Kathy A. Smith and her husband, John, and Suzanne N. Kelley and her husband, Tim, all of Calais; a brother, James L. Nelligan and his wife, Eva, of Bangor; nine grandchildren, Jonathan, Emily, Stephen, and Sarah Smith, Sean and Scott Kelley, Lexi, Ambrosia and Lilianne Nelligan; he was predeceased by an infant son, Michael J. Nelligan. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, March 3, at The Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Calais, by the Very Rev. Mark Nolette, Celebrant. A reception will take place immediately following the funeral, in the Rev. Andrew J. Arseneau Parish Hall. Interment will be in The Red Beach Cemetery in Red Beach. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Building fund of The Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church or to the Restoration fund of Fire Station Number 1 of Calais.
