EAST MILLINOCKET – William C. Birt, 89, was born Nov. 8, 1917, in How-land, the son of Walter H. and Mary Jane (MacNevin) Birt. He retired from Great Northern Paper Co., as an engineer, after nearly 50 years of service. During that time, he spent several years with Great Southern, Georgia. Bill served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II in Europe. He was very active with the snowmobile club in Medway, and was well known for planning and building items needed for the clubhouse. Bill assisted in many things for the First Congregational Church, East Millinocket, including the new heating plant. He was predeceased by his wife, Chrystal (Perry) Birt; four brothers, Walter, Harold, Robert and George; a brother-in- law, Carlton Leavitt; two nephews, Walter Howard Birt and Douglas Birt. Bill is survived by two brothers, Lewis Birt of Bangor and Daniel Birt and his wife, Pauline, of East Millinocket; a sister, Catherine Leavitt of Eddington; nieces and nephews, Jonathan Birt and his wife, Paula, Valerie Barnes and her husband, Gerald, Clifford Birt, Dorothy Jane Sawyer and her husband, Stephen, Karen Curtis, Mark Leavitt, Harold Birt and his wife, Brenda, Arthur Birt and his wife, Carla, and Diane Brown and her husband, Dana; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at the First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, 11 Maple St., East Millinocket, with Pastor Andrew MacLeod, pastor, officiating. Spring interment will be at East Millinocket Cemetery.
