PRESQUE ISLE and FORT MYERS, Fla. – Charles Daniel Eber, 89, died Feb. 8, 2007, in Bangor, after a long illness. He was born Dec. 22, 1917, in Everett, Mass., the son of Charles and Helen Eber. The family moved to Rochester, N.Y., where he grew up. He attended Louisiana State University for two years, majoring in aeronautical engineering, before enlisting in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was commissioned to second lieutenant after completing pilot training. He volunteered to fly bomber missions in the European theater, and was subsequently transferred to North Africa, flying B-24s. After completing his tour of duty, he was assigned to the Presque Isle Air Force Base to assist with the base’s decommissioning. During his tour of service in Europe, he earned the rank of captain. It was at the Presque Isle air base that he met his wife, the late Mary Maxine Gould. They married and raised three children, Daniel, Mary and Michael. He farmed in Easton for 12 years, was last president of the Presque Isle General Hospital and the first president of A. R. Gould Memorial Hospital. He then joined Maine Public Service, as head of purchasing, retiring from that position after 25 years. He took pride in being able to serve the community of Presque Isle and enjoyed his final years in Fort Myers, Fla. He was a member of the Hideaway Country Club, Fort Myers, Fla., the Presque Isle Country Club and the Presque Isle Flying Club. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharist minister and a congregant of the Catholic church in Fort Myers, Fla. He was a lifelong member of the Kiwanis Club of Presque Isle, serving as president for four years; board chair of the Wildes Foundation, providing funding for the A. R. Gould Memorial Hospital and served on the board of Northern Maine Vocational Technical College, now N.M.C.C. He is survived by his sister, Helene LaScala; his brothers, Alton and Arthur; son, Daniel Eber and his wife, Solange, of Portland; daughter, Mary Frances Darsch and her husband, Jack, of Windsor, Conn.; son, Michael Eber of Bangor; two grandchildren, Daniel Darsch and his wife, Sarah, of Plymouth, Mass., and Sara Darsch of Boston. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Raymond Morency, celebrant. A spring interment will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. Those who wish may donate in his memory to the County Dialysis Unit, Aroostook Medical Center. <>
