SOUTH PORTLAND and HAMPDEN – William “Bill” E. Kelley, 80, died peacefully Oct. 8, 2007, with his daughter at his side, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1926, in Portland, the son of John J. Kelley Sr. and Gertrude Conley Kelley. He grew up in Portland and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. In 1950, he graduated from Northeastern School of Accounting. Throughout the years, he had worked as an office manager for Ideal Cleansers & Launderers, Inc., an accountant for Walsh Construction Co. and Baker & Adams, an office manager for King Cole Foods, and retired as an accountant from Speedway, Inc. He considered Bob Bahre, the owner of Speedway, Inc., and his family as family too and they treated him the same. He was a resident of South Portland for about 40 years. Bill was a communicant of Holy Cross Church where he also ushered. He moved to Hampden about five and one half years ago, where he and Nyla lived with their daughter, Pam and her family. During that time, he was a communicant of St. Matthew Church, Hampden. Bill is survived by his wife, Nyla (Harvie) Kelley, whom he married Oct. 16, 1954; his daughter, Pamela Smith of Hampden and her husband, Gary; and their daughters, Sarah and Rebecca. One of 13 children, he is survived by only a sister, Katherine “Katta” Haley. In addition he has many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, after by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Holy Cross Church, corner of Broadway and Cottage Road, with the Rev. Robert Vaillancourt officiating. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
