AUSTIN, Texas – William Glenwood Black Jr., 84, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007. A native of Oklahoma, Mr. Black spent most of his life in Texas and Maine. He graduated with a bachelors degree from Phillips University, Enid, Okla., and did post-graduate work at the University of Oklahoma and UCLA with a certification in meteorology. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as an air traffic controller in Bangor, where he met Mary, his wife of 60 years. His Air Corps service took him to Newfoundland on Christmas Eve, then later to the Azores, where he concluded his military duty. Mr. Black was a longtime associate of National Reserve Life Insurance, Houston, Texas, before pursuing his passion as an individual commodity investor. Mr. Black was a lover of classic cars, stylish clothes, big band music, model airplanes, basset hounds and especially spending summers in Lucerne, with his family. Survivors are his wife, Mary Louise Piper Black; three daughters, Becky Dement, Betsy Simpson and husband, Harold, and Sally Reid and husband, Lynn; and six grandchildren, Darcy Dement, Mandy Dement Barrow, Sarah and Sam Simpson and Billy and Scott Avent. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, Texas.
