PORTLAND and HOULTON William Herbert “Bill” Libby, 66, died Dec. 20, 2007, with his wife by his bedside, at his home in Portland, losing a courageous four-year battle with kidney cancer. He was born March 20, 1941, in Houlton, son of Hugh and Marion (McLaughlin) Libby of Amity. Bill lived in Amity and Houlton until January 1985, when he moved to Portland with his wife, Lynn. Bill graduated in 1959 from Ricker Classical Institute and continued his education at General Motors Institute, Warren, Mich. He was a member of Amity Baptist Church, the Amity Grange for 30 years and a past member of Houlton Elks Lodge No. 835. He was very active in the Houlton Flying Club and earned his private pilot’s license 40 years ago. Bill was proud to be a Mason and Shriner, and was a member of Houlton Monument Lodge for 40 years. He was past president of the Portland Deering Lions Club and a member for more than 16 years, serving on the executive of that club for most of those years. He was in car/truck sales for 45 years and worked for Portland North Truck Center for the past 15 years. Bill is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lynn; his father, Hugh Libby of Amity; his daughter, Lynette Rarick and son-in-law, Jon, of Dayton, Ohio, and their children, Jessica, Jenna and Michael; daughter, Leisha Murray and granddaughter, Chelsi, both of Houlton; grandson, Zachary Murray of Saco; his son, Craig Libby and daughter-in-law, Kristi, of San Diego, and their son, Joshua; his sister, Patricia Callnan of Delray Beach, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Michael Lynds and Steve Lynds of Monticello, Beth McFarland of Houlton, Charlotte Lynds and Kristi Jacob of Georgia; and his very special aunt, Louise Libby of Portland. Bill was predeceased by his mother, Marion Libby, April 1, 2001. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Reggie Corey officiating. Spring interment will be held at Amity Cemetery.
