BANGOR – William Stanley Devino passed away Friday, April 8, 2005, at his home in Bangor, after a long illness. He was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Burlington, Vt., the son of William Arthur and Elaine (Blaise) Devino. “Stan” served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received a bachelor of arts in pre-law from the University of Vermont in 1951, an master of arts in Economics from the University of Connecticut in 1953 and a Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University in 1959. While at Michigan State, he served as a consultant to The Michigan State Senate Labor Committee and The Governor’s Task Force on Labor. He was a Ford Foundation dissertation fellow, lecturer and research associate at the Labor and Industrial Relations Center. Dr. Devino joined the University of Maine faculty in 1960. He served as director of The School of Business Administration from 1963-1965 and as dean of The College of Business Administration from 1965 until his retirement in 1996 at the age of 70. He also served, for a time, on The Maine State Governor’s Advisory Committee on Business Taxation and as president of The New England Region of American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business Deans. Dr. Devino was dean emeritus of the College of Business Administration and professor emeritus of Business & Economics since 1997. In addition to his 36 year academic career at The University of Maine, Dean Devino challenged himself in Labor Relations, providing his expertise in the areas of fact-finding, mediation, and arbitration. He was elected to The National Academy of Arbitrators in 1975 and negotiated numerous labor disputes throughout the East from 1975 until illness necessitated his retirement in 1996. He held memberships in The Advisory Council to the American Arbitration Association (Boston Office), The Panel of Fact-finders and Panel of Mediators (New Hampshire Public Employees Labor Relations Board), The Panel of Fact-finders and Panel of Mediators (Maine Public Employees Labor Relations Board), The Arbitration Roster of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and The National Labor Panel of the American Arbitration Association. Dr. Devino authored “Exhaustion of Unemployment Benefits During a Recession” and co-authored “A Study of Textile Mill Closings in Selected New England Communities”. Stan was predeceased by his beloved wife, Raphaella (Gillespie) Devino in 1995. Survivors include his two daughters, Bonnie McGinley and her long time partner, Rick Hill, of Goshen, N.Y. and Denise Savoy and her husband, Eugene, of Bangor; six grandchildren, Jennifer McGinley Maskala and her husband, Joseph, of Chicago, Matthew McGinley of Seattle, and Rebekah Devino, Christopher Goldsmith and Lauren and Caleb Savoy of Bangor; one sister, Constance Shea and her husband, Jack, of Burlington, Vt.; one brother, Paul Devino and his wife, Pamela, of St. Peters, Mo.; several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14th, at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington, Vt. Entombment will follow in the family crypt at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington. A Memorial Mass to be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bangor, will be announced at a later date.
