WILLIAM W. MCELRAVY SEARSPORT – William W. McElravy, 72, died Sept. 22, 2008, in Bangor. He was born Dec. 22, 1935, in Washington, Pa., son of Henry and Mable (Freeman) McElravy. He was a career U.S. Marine, heavily decorated including the President’s Citation with two Bronze Stars, Combat Action Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After his career in the Marines, he received a degree in social service and worked at Bradbury and Maine State Prison. He then worked at Belfast Laboratory. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and was known as “Striper Bill.” William was predeceased by a brother, Henry Jr.; and sister, Mary Alice. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Iva G. McElravy; two children, Shawn McElravy, who is currently serving in the U.S. Army, and Sharon McLain of Georgia; his children’s mother, Joyce McElravy of Fairfield; two brothers, John McElravy of Florida and Mac McElravy of California; and five grandchildren. Memorial services with military honors will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, with Pastor Arthur Cotton officiating. A reception will be immediately afterward at Stockton Spring Community House.
