DOVER-FOXCROFT – William Zimmerman, 83, loving husband of Bar-bara (Atkinson) Zimmerman, pas-sed away and went to be with his son, Jimmy, Jan. 31, 2007, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Old Bridge, N.J., the son of Emil and Lillian (Andrews) Zimmerman. He attended schools in Old Bridge, N.J. During World War II, Bill served with the U.S. Army and after the war, he served with the U.S. Air Force. He retired after 20 years of military service. After retiring, Bill was employed at the tannery in Dover-Foxcroft, Charleston Air Force Base as a steam plant operator until the base closed, then as a boiler operator at Guilford Industries and as a night watchman at Dexter Shoe Co. Bill enjoyed gardening, his rides out into the country and especially spending time with family and friends. He will be fondly remembered for his favorite saying, “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.” He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara of Dover-Foxcroft; five children, Ralph Zimmerman and his wife, Joyce, of Guilford, Lucy Grant of Dover-Foxcroft, William E. Zimmerman and his fiance, Robin, of Dover-Foxcroft, John Steven Zimmerman and his wife, Beth, of Milo and Paul Zimmerman and his companion, Alicia Ranslow, of Dover-Foxcroft; 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Minna Reynolds of Cape Cod, Mass., and Catherine Zimmerman of Houston. He was predeceased by his mother, father, stepfather; son, James S. Zimmerman; three sisters, Othelia Thorne, Gertrude Robbins and Barbara Dubois; and a brother, Emil Zimmerman. Friends and family are invited to share in celebrating his life 4-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the Gerrish-Warren Community Center, Thayer Parkway, Park Street, Dover-Foxcroft. Graveside committal services will be conducted at the family lot at Dover Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft.
