PEMBROKE – Helen Small, 67, died unexpectedly Oct. 8, 2008. She was born Feb. 14, 1941, the daughter of Ford Matthews and Elsie (Besse) Matthews. Helen grew up in Eastport and graduated from Shead High School in 1959. She loved her family deeply. Helen not only raised her own children, but she was happy to help raise her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was the family’s number one babysitter. She loved doing crafts and picking wild flowers while on nature walks with the children. Everyone loved “Grammie” Helen. Her greatest passion and favorite pastime was bingo and ramming with Jeanette. She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, James Stanhope; and two nieces. Helen was a devoted mother to her four children, Richard Matthews of Pembroke, Lynn Cyr and husband, Bob, of Augusta, Roger Small, and Lori Cushing and husband, James, all of Pembroke; six special grandchildren, Karen, Kim, David, Michael, Adam and Scotty; two great-grandchildren, Justine and Miranda; a brother, Loring Stanhope and his wife, Rebecca; two sisters, Kathleen Stevens and husband, Donald, and Hilda Stevens; many beloved nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Susan Taylor. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Hillside Cemetery, Eastport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family at P.O. Box L, Pembroke, ME 04666.
