BANGOR – John Leo Geary Jr., 91, passed away Oct. 12, 2008, at a Bangor nursing facility. He was born July 1, 1917, in Brighton, Mass., the son of Gertrude E. (McNamara) and John L. Geary. John was educated in Newton, Mass., attended Northeastern University and graduated in 1940 from Boston University. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific area during World War II for 44 months, and he received a Bronze Star and a Combat Medical Badge. John was discharged as captain, medical service of the Americal Division, January 1946. Afterwards he taught school in Belfast and Needham, Mass. John retired to Cape Cod in 1982. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening and being with family. John is survived by his wife, Meredith; three children, Peter N. Geary and his wife, Christine, of Avon, Mass., Steven B. Geary and wife, Mary Ann, of Chatham, N.J., and Jennifer A. Duffy of Bangor; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mariam “Bunty” Hastings of Bangor and Gardner F. Dame of California.
