JONESBORO and GLENBURN – Goldie Blanche (McLaughlin) Martelis, 84, went home to be with her Lord Friday, Oct. 17, 2008. She was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Jonesboro, daughter of the late Charles and Enscena Jennie (Fish) McLaughlin. Mrs. Martelis grew up in Jonesboro, where she attended and graduated from Jonesboro High School. After her education, she moved to Massachusetts, where she became employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She retired in 1978 from Fernald State School, where she worked as head dietician. Retiring to her family homestead in Jonesboro, she became reinvolved with Union Church, which she had been a member of since 1935. She was also a past member of Jonesboro Grange and a life member of Machias Chapter No. 83 Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Martelis enjoyed knitting, sewing, Beano and spending time with her great-grandchildren. In 1992 she moved to Glenburn to be near her family. She shared 46 years of marriage with the late Jonas Martelis, who died in 1989. Family members include a daughter, Jean Kerkman and husband, Larry, of Kenduskeag and Florida; granddaughters, Deedra Leavitt and husband, Michael, of Corinth and Tamara Pennell and husband, Steve, of Lexington Park, Md.; three great-grandchildren, Mikaela and Zachary Leavitt of Corinth and Samantha Pennell of Lexington Park, Md.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Charlie McLaughlin; and a sister, Mittie Look. The family extends a special thank you to Tom, Phyllis and Gloria, and all of her friends at Sunny Gables, Glenburn. The family would also like to personally thank members of Glenburn Hudson Ambulance Service, the staff at St. Joseph Hospital and Ross Manor for their care and compassion during this difficult time. Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Jonesboro Union Church, Looks Point Road, Jonesboro. Burial will be afterwards at Forest Hill Cemetery, Jonesboro.
