NEWPORT and BANGOR – Lt. Col. John M. Lane, U.S. Army, retired, 88, died peacefully Nov. 2, 2008, at his Bangor residence. He was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Solon, a son of John and Jessie (Safford) Lane Sr. He married Marguerite (Haseltine), Jan. 30, 1943, and graduated from the University of Maine – Orono in 1950, with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Barrows-Skidgel Post 105 American Legion and Newport Memorial Post 11191 VFW, both of Newport. John taught for 13 years at Newport Junior High School. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marguerite of Bangor; two sons, John Michael Lane and wife, Kathleen, of Rockland, and Mark and wife, Patricia Lane, of Newburgh; two daughters, Janie and husband, Michael Ames, of Newport, and Cindy and husband, David Hansberry, of Litchfield, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Stephanie and husband, Daniel Elliot, Christopher and Derek Lane, Jessica and Katie Ames, Steven Hansberry and Dyane Dauphinee; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, with the Rev. George Darling officiating. Burial will be noon Friday, after the funeral at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
