EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — Winning the Eastern Maine Class D schoolgirl soccer championship was a dream come true for Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook.
The dream got even better Saturday morning, as the Warriors won their first-ever state championship in dramatic fashion, with Elizabeth Goodall scoring with 1:32 remaining in overtime to clinch a 1-0 victory over Western Maine champ Greenville at Schenck High School.
Southern Aroostook finishes 16-1-1 and Greenville 8-2-4.
Goodall’s championship-clinching play commenced after Jasmine Rockwell was awarded a direct kick after a handball, which Janel Rockwell pounced on, directed to an unmarked Goodall who one-touched the ball inside the right goalpost.
Both teams had multiple chances to get on the board both in regulation and in the extra session.
In fact, Goodall had a wide-open shot just inside the penalty area in the second half but the ball struck the crossbar.
Southern Aroostook had the greater of the scoring chances, dominating the midfield and marking the Lakers’ strikers effectively.
Many of Greenville’s limited chances were thwarted by the stellar goaltending of Emily Cummings, who made two saves on six shots and scooped up several loose balls deep in the offensive end.
Sidney Richardson came away with five saves on 15 shots for the Lakers.
