REBECCA M. (BOWEN) DAKIN BELFAST – Rebecca M. (Bowen) Dakin, 84, died Nov. 9, 2008, at a local health care facility after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Belfast, daughter of Walter L. and Erlena B. (Philbrick) Bowen. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Monroe Extension and past member of Eastern Star. She also volunteered at Waldo County General Hospital for many years. Later in life, Rebecca graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, with a degree in teaching, and substitute taught in Hampden and Winterport schools. She also worked in Belfast at the shoe factory in the ’40s and ’50s. She enjoyed knitting, quilting and donated many of her hats and mittens to local schools. She spent many years with her husband at Toddy Pond and Swan Lake boating and fishing. She was predeceased by her parents; and her husband, Erling C. Dakin. Survivors include her son, Wayne Dakin and wife, Susan, of Hermon; her sister, Jane Snyder of Belfast; her three grandchildren, Wendy Ruddell and husband, Matt, of Jamison, Pa., Michael Dakin and wife, Kelly, of Augusta and Charlotte Leighton and husband, Stephen, of Baileyville; five great-grandchildren, Emily, Jordan, Fawn, Noelle and Brittany; her nieces, Sandra L. Rogers and Tammy Erickson; and her longtime companion, her dog, Gracie. Family and friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday.
