EASTPORT – Ethel M. Hicks, 85, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, with her family by her side at a Bangor hospital. Ethel was born March 11, 1923, in Eastport, daughter of the late George and Vida (Calder) McIntyre. After graduating from Shead Memorial High School, she moved to Washington D.C., where she worked for the War Department at the Pentagon for several years before returning home to Eastport. In March 1959, she married John Hicks in Eastport. Ethel owned and operated The Sunbeam Restaurant and The Coffee Shop, and cooked for several local restaurants before her retirement. She was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church, Eastport; she will be remembered for her wedding cakes, great cooking, and her fish chowder and molasses cookies on the fourth of July. Ethel also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, where she was a past president. One of Ethel’s proudest accomplishments was receiving the Outstanding Alumni Athlete Award for her 1940 state champion women’s basketball team at Shead Memorial High School. She enjoyed playing bingo, scratch tickets and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Ethel was predeceased by her husband, John Hicks; and two sisters, Mary O’Sullivan and Ruth Cheverie. Surviving are her three sons, Jack Hicks and his companion, Tami, of Lyman, Bill Hicks and his wife, Nina, of Minot and Bobby Hicks and his wife, Jennifer, of Wells; a sister, Frances Finch of Eastport; a brother, Stanley McIntyre and his wife, Barbara, of Kittery; 12 grandchildren, Erin, Jacke, Jessica, Jenna, Shelby, Wyatt, Dylan, John, Owen, Althea, Ashley and Joshua; four great-grandchildren, Stanley, Kyle, Noah and Gunnar; a special niece, Mary Pottle of Eastport; many nieces and nephews. A Liturgy of Christian burial and Holy Communion will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Christ Episcopal Church, 21 Key St., Eastport. Burial will be afterward at Hillside Cemetery.
