OLD TOWN and BRADLEY – Wendall Irving Spencer, 80, passed away Nov. 16, 2008, at a local nursing home in Bangor, after a long illness. Wendall was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Bradley, the first child of the late Irving A. and Thelma (Bond) Spencer. He was educated in Bradley schools and graduated from Old Town High School in 1945, where he served as valedictorian of his class. He was employed for many years at the then Barton’s store in Bradley, having left to become a member of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, stationed for a period of time in Germany. Upon his return from the military, he became a salesman for the then Brown & White Paper Co., in Bangor, covering both the down east areas and also the northern part of the county. Wendall will be well remembered for his many stories and especially his “puns,” which he so very proudly told to anybody willing to listen. He proudly attended to both his parents needs and after his father’s passing, he and his mother left Bradley and moved to Old Town. For the past four years, he had resided at Woodland’s Assisted Living Facility, Brewer, where he was completely contented to be there. He made many new friends and enjoyed many of the various activities offered, especially singing, of which he was very good at. He is survived by two brothers, Donald A. Spencer Sr. and wife, Bea, and Carroll Spencer and wife, Mary Lou, all of Old Town. He especially enjoyed his nieces and nephews, Shirley J. Brissette of Old Town, James Spencer of Glenburn, Edward Spencer of N. Monmouth and Donald Spencer Jr. of Hermon, Ann Marie Wheeler of Eddington, Christine Gosselin and Cherylee Taylor, both of Old Town and Karen Dunton, of Milford. He also brought much pleasure to his many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was a special “uncle” to all. He was predeceased by one sister, Madelyn; and one brother, Franklin. A special thanks to the staff at Woodlands Assisted Living and Eastside Rehab. Many thanks to the wonderful people from the hospice program and Dr. Toby Atkins, who always treated Wendall so well. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. with Associate Pastor Scott Benner, of United Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Bradley Cemetery. Light refreshments will be held at the funeral home after the committal. In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to a charity of your choice.
