NIANTIC, Conn. – Charlotte Taylor, 98, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 25, 2008, at Bridebrook Rehabilitation Center, Niantic, Conn. She was born March 24, 1910, in Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard Island, Mass., the daughter of Capt. John S. Reynolds and Charlotte Reynolds of Vineyard Haven, Mass. She was the wife of the late Ralph M. Taylor, to whom she was married for 67 years. Early school years were on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. The family spent winters in Newton, Mass., where she graduated from high school. She worked as a librarian at Boston Public Library. She was a professional singer on Worchester radio, where she had her own program. Charlotte also sang as a soloist for several churches. Charlotte was a resident of Bangor for 50 years before she moved to Connecticut to be near her daughter. Her father was a whaling captain out of New Bedford, Mass. He and Charlotte’s mother spent 10 years going to sea before Charlotte was born. They are written about in the book “Whaling Wives.” She was a member of Unitarian Church, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., and a member of the Audubon Society. She was a volunteer for American Red Cross and Eastern Main Medical Center. She was well known in Bangor for her beautiful gardens. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Taylor Chadbourne and her husband, Barry, of Niantic, Conn.; three grandsons and their wives, James Barry and Susan, John Taylor and Patricia, and Lyle Scott and Deborah; and five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Nicole, Emily, Gwenalynn and Christopher. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Dolby. Funeral services are private. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Haven, Mass.
