FARMINGTON – Meda S. Libby, 92, formerly of Burnham, died peacefully, Nov. 23, 2008, surrounded by her family, at the home of her grandson, Brian Libby and his wife, Julie. She was born May 5, 1916, in Newport, the daughter of Emma Pearl (Boothby) Sanborn and John F. Sanborn. She graduated from Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield, in 1934. She married Howard I. Libby Jr., Oct. 6, 1934, and in 2005 they celebrated their 71st anniversary. Meda and Howard lived in various Maine towns, including South Berwick and South Paris, before moving to Burnham in 1967. Meda was a homemaker and later was a partner with her husband in Libby Library Services. They traveled all over northern New England selling books to schools and libraries. She enjoyed an almost daily game of Scrabble with Howard for many years. She was devoted to her husband and taking care of her family. Among her other interests were gardening, feeding the birds, knitting mittens for various charities and doing jigsaw puzzles. She is survived by her sons, Gerald and his wife, Patricia, of Farmington, Stephen and his wife, Anne I., of East Lyme, Conn.; a son-in-law, David Howarth of Berwick; seven grandchildren, Ricky Howarth of Berwick, Daniel Howarth and his wife, Gretchen, of Sewell, N.J., Virginia Steeves and her husband, John, of North Berwick, Kevin Libby and his wife, Elizabeth, of Nashua, N.H., Brian Libby and his wife, Julie, of Farmington, Jeffrey Libby and his wife, Reba, of Auburn, Mass., and Laurie Elwell and her husband, Jonathan, of Richmond, Va.; a granddaughter-in-law, Beth Ann Howarth of Berwick, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, July 1, 2006; by her daughter, Judith, in 2005; by two grandchildren, Michael Howarth, in 1961 and Timothy Howarth, in 1997; and by twin great-grandchildren, Abernathy and Malachi Libby, at birth in 2008. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Alfred Sanborn and George Sanborn; and by her sister, Florence Davis. An opportunity to visit with the family will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, with a memorial service held 11 a.m. Refreshments will be served at the funeral home after the service.
