BUCKSPORT – Marion Dunbar Grindle, 99, wife of the late Alton D. Grindle, died Nov. 26, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Jan. 29, 1909, in East Orland, daughter of Rodick H. and Bessie Bowden Dubar. Marion attended East Orland Grade School and East Maine Conference Seminary, Bucksport, graduating as salutatorian in 1926, at the age of 16. She also attended Eastern State Normal School, Castine and Simmons College, Boston. After her marriage to Alton Grindle in 1930, she worked with him at Grindle’s IGA for nearly 30 years. They worked together as secretary/treasurer of Bucksport Savings and Loan Association from 1959 to 1978. As a devoted member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church, she served in leadership roles of many committees throughout the years. She was a lifetime member of Order of the Eastern Star. In her retirement years, she was an avid reader and served as a book reviewer for Bucksport Memorial Library. She was a charter member of Bucksport Golf Club, where she won several trophies and she had been an active member of Bucksport Garden Club and October Club. She is survived by three children: a son, Robert Grindle of Clarks Green, Pa.; a daughter, Jean Carville and her husband, Linwood, of Orono and a daughter, Norma Patterson of Englewood, Fla.; five grandchildren, Douglas Carville and wife, Karen, of Augusta, Deborah Welton of South Boston, Mass., Jay Patterson and wife, Leslie, of Kittery, Martha Patterson of Tulsa, Okla., and Eric Patterson and wife, Lisa, of York; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Alton; her sister, Evelyn Bickford; and a grandson, Paul Patterson. A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. on her 100 birthday, Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Bucksport, with the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may honor her by making a donation in her memory to Franklin Street United Methodist Church, P.O.
