ELLSWORTH – Marjorie Hazel (Smith) MacLeod passed away Nov. 27, 2008, at her home with her family present. She was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Fairfield, daughter of Charles and Nina (Williams) Smith. She was a 1937 graduate of Lawrence High School, Fairfield, and went on to Colby College and Lesley School to complete her teaching certification. She was the founding educator of Katahdin School for Exceptional Children, East Millinocket, and a secret pal to many. Marjorie spent her life giving of herself. She will be remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother, educator, a musician, a poet, a gifted crafter, a benefactor and a friend to all who know her. Some of her many affiliations include Eastern Star, Millinocket Philharmonic Club, East Millinocket and Medway schools, East Millinocket First Congregational Church, United Baptist Church, Ellsworth and Pleasant Street Methodist Church, Waterville. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Chester, Walter Leigh and Charles Smith; and her son, Donald “Butch” MacLeod Jr. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Donald A. MacLeod Sr.; and her children, Marjorie “Muffin” Bray and her husband, Milton, Bonnie Linscott and her husband, Thomas, Carl MacLeod and his wife, Bette, Suzanne Banis, and Heather MacLeod and her husband, Brady Harris; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family is especially grateful to the caregivers that gave selfless care to Marjorie. A funeral service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at United Baptist Church, Pine Street, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Scott Conners, pastor, officiating. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Private interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.
